The Werribee Tour

The Victorian Chapter is very pleased to announce a one day tour in Werribee, Victoria.

The morning will start off at 10am to view a very impressive and extensive collection of Australian furniture and Australiana. The owner of the collection will provide a guided tour of this major collection housed at private premises in Werribee.

A light lunch will be provided at this location.

In the afternoon, the tour will visit Werribee Park Mansion in Werribee South. Werribee Park Mansion was built in 1877 by the Chirnside family, wealthy Victorian pastoralists. The mansion with 60 rooms spread over several wings is built in the Italianate architecture style and has undergone extensive restoration. Many of the Chirnside family’s items, including clothing and furniture remain with the mansion.

The tour of Werribee Park Mansion will be led by Terence Lane, independent art historian and writer; former Senior Curator of Australian Art at the National Gallery of Victoria.

The President and committee of the Australiana Society invite all members and friends to the 2019 Kevin Fahy Annual Lecture & Dinner.

Date: Saturday 23 March 2019

Time: 6:00pm for 6.30pm

Place: The Women’s College, University of Sydney, 15 Carillon Avenue, Newtown, Sydney

Limited parking at site. Nearest university parking station is located at Western Ave, enter via university entrance at Carillon Ave. Parking charged at weekend flat rate of $6 maximum.

Cost: $100 for members, $110 for non-members

Guest dinner speaker: Dr Grace Cochrane AM

Lecture title: Made in Australia

Grace Cochrane AM is an independent curator, writer and consultant. From 1988-2005, Grace was the curator, later senior curator, of Australian decorative arts and design at the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney. She is the author of The Crafts Movement in Australia: A History (NSW University Press, 1992). For 40 years, she has talked about the crafts and design in lectures and conferences in Australia and overseas, has written for a range of journals and publications, and examined submissions from many PhD and Master’s candidates.
